創作者張剛華的成長經驗被包裹在台灣文化之中，包含中文、客語、閩南語建構出的語言環境與完整的台灣教育體系。而他有別於成長路上其他同學的部分，就是身分證上標註的出生地：印尼。在2018年，創作者獲文化部青年文化園丁補助計畫，發起並主持《台印交流計畫-藝術介入地方與場域限定創作》田調計畫，前往印尼之山口洋、坤甸、雅加達、日惹等城市，參訪當地藝術家與藝術機構。在為期一個月的計畫執行期間，張剛華體驗了過去成長環境中熟悉與未曾經驗的人、事、物，揉合客家、馬來、爪哇等多民族、宗教、文化的經歷被體現在食物、語言等方面；而在印尼傳統理容院裡提供/享受的服務，更可透過人與人之間的日常碰觸直接閱讀其藏在背後的故事，重新梳理在地文化的發展與組成脈絡。本次計劃將以「洗頭」作為田調方法，前往泰國曼谷、菲律賓達沃這兩個城市，與當地藝術機構交流並蒐集在地社群故事。

延續創作者近兩年發展的「參與式展演」計畫，包含洗澡、做飯、睡覺等日常行為，《田調：洗頭Field research: Shampoo is telling a story》預期藉由洗頭這個日常行為，進而討論此行為背後所涵括的文化與習俗，以及外溢出與人、社群的故事。「洗頭」在當代消費行為中屬於較為親密的體驗，它處理了社交行為中如清潔、禮儀、時尚等不同層次的需求。在亞洲不同地區傳統的理容院、美髮沙龍中，都可能提供不同的附加服務：按摩、修眉、刮鬍子等；而這些理容院、美髮沙龍在該社群與居民產生了不同的黏著：例如在新竹湖口工業區，有以來自印尼的新住民新娘經營的理容院，成為新住民與印尼籍移工的聚散地，店內以臺式的理容服務融合印尼習慣的服務，並以家鄉的新聞、社群、親友做為話題，在區域內扮演支持特定族群的角色。本次《田調計畫：洗頭》，作者期待能以這個日常行為作為田調工具，由藝術家自身去體驗、交換、執行「洗頭」，重新認識這個日常行為在當代文化、地方社群與個人之中隱含的現象與故事文本。

2019 Field Research: Shampoo Is Telling A Story, Tentacles (Bangkok, Thailand), Rm.74 Artspace and Gallery (Manila and Davao, Philipe), Overseas Arts Travel by National Culture and Arts Foundation, Taiwan.

“Shampoo is Telling A Story” is a research-based project by the artist, Chang Kang Hua. Before coming to Thailand and the Philippines on April to May 2019, the artist regarded shampooing as a method to reveal and reflect relationships between individuals. With his Bangkok and Philippine residencies, he visited traditional barbershops and hair salons in towns and cities, exchanged stories with locals during shampooing sessions, and exchanged perspectives on shampooing with fellow artists. Chang’s idea of shampooing has then evolved and “salons” have ceased to become institutions and have been transformed into communities and people. Behind the daily routine of shampooing, he realizes that issues, like gender, environment and social politics, could be approached and explored through it. The project was supported by the National Culture and Arts Foundation as part of the Overseas Arts Travel project.

After residencies in Thailand and Philippines, he was invited to present the preliminary work-in-progress performance as part of the Asia Discovers Asia Meeting for Contemporary Performance by Taipei Performing Arts Center. The project then had engaged the local community Tua-Tiu-Tiann in Taipei city. In the community, Chang called participants not only from local but also out of local. He attempted to initiate more opportunities and methods of conversation when he realized the feature of Tua-Tiu-Tiann as a historical business district was that the community is open for everyone. During the process, the participants re-discovered local stories, approached physical reactions between individuals and also practiced the Taiwanese sit-shampooed style. Them, Chang framed it as a performance in the part of the Tua-Tiu-Tiann International Festival of Arts. All the participants shampooed audiences’ hair in the backyard of the fruit shop, and there were some onlookers surrounded to see the interactions between them.
