The work talks about “shame,” which is inspired by those private sensation: ashamed, betray and immoral. It is constructed by six performers and audience. Audience are allowed to walk around in the space and interact with performers. Rather than seeing, participating is necessary to experience this work.

To begin with the status of the show, performers are regards as living exhibits, which are displayed in front of the audience in the space: a freak show. Actions and movements in UNSPEAKABLE are inspired by the pieces of Seven Deadly Sins from Bible, The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Milan Kundera, 1984), I am Hsu Liang-Liang (Lee Wei-Ching, 2010) and The Funeral (Wang Chin-Yuan, 2010). Instead of creating illusions by settings in the space, six performers were asked to focus on presenting their liveness to the audience during that time and space. To begin with alienation, audience becomes part of the performance, when they take photos, peek others or interact with performers. Special relations between the performer and the audience started appearing at the moment. In order to bring out the issue of shame, this production is not intended to evoke resonance among audience, but tries to point out how does the feeling of being shameful establish. Shame manifests by encountering the others, and that’s the reason why the setting of the scene resembles a live exhibition space.

UNSPEAKABLE responded the core concept SHAME by its own presenting form: a live exhibition, which is questioning why the regular relation in theatre is telling and being told. Comparing with a conventional way to produce a theatre performance, the creator emphasized that audience as the most important element of theatre, who can SEE a theatre work by their physical experience instead staying and seating in the dark.
